Interview with Paul Cayard

Interview with Paul Cayard - Oracle Racing Team (America's Cup Campaign 2003)

"Paul, you're the proud owner of a blokart. What are your impressions?"
"The blokart is a very well engineered landsailing yacht. Since we're into sailing a little bit we really have fun discovering a new aspect or new application for our sport and what we like doing. A bunch of us here at Oracle Racing have bought the blokart and we've even organised little regattas right around the (America's Cup) base as well as some trips to the beaches. I think that when all the other America's Cup teams show up everyone's going to want to get one because they're a lot of fun and they're real practical. They fold up in a little suitcase, they rig up real quick. This cement driveway (concrete wharf in America's Cup Village) right here provides a real good racetrack for us, so I think they're going to be a pretty popular item. The thing I was impressed with was how well engineered it is - the steering mechanism, and how the wheels attach, little (fibreglass) axles, and it's a high quality piece of equipment. I think there's a good chance it'll catch on."

"How does it compare to sailing a yacht?"
"It's much more like a catamaran in that it goes so quickly that the apparent wind angles are always very far forward. You sheet the sail in almost always on centerline regardless of what direction you're going. If you get on a good reach like we often have here at the base the blokart will get up on two wheels and you've got to lean out a little bit and try to hold it down. A lot of similarities to sailing."
